Teaching Philosophy or Approach

My approach to teaching is to break down complicated material in a way that is understandable so that the student will have a solid foundation to build upon. I first explain the financial reporting standard, work through an example, and then allow the student to work through another example either individually or in a group. I also try to make each student feel comfortable to ask any questions and participate in class discussions.

Research Interests and Expertise

My research interests include online accounting pedagogy, retirement planning, accounting ethics, tax equity, and financial literacy. Currently, I am working with a colleague on a paper titled “Proactive Retirement Account Choice between Traditional and Roth IRAs for Different Generations” in addition to a financial literacy sabbatical project.

Awards and Honors

  • D CEO 500 Powerful Leaders in DFW, D CEO Magazine. (2023)
  • King/Haggar Scholar Award, University of Dallas. Funds were used for International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Certificate Program, American Institute of CPAs.

Professional Engagement and Impact

I began my career in public accounting in the tax department of Ernst &Young and then I went to work as the controller for a family group client that owned various businesses. I left the controllership role to become a professor. While being a professor, I have maintained industry connections by establishing the “Accounting and Finance Society” at UD, serving on the Educational Relations Committee for the Texas Society of CPAs ,  and serving as a board member and Academic Affairs and Student Affairs Coordinator for the Dallas Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). I was the conference coordinator for the IMA Student Extravaganza Conference for the two years hosted by UD.

Personal Statement

I feel fortunate to teach both undergraduate students as well as graduate students. Watching my students grow from the beginning to the end of the semester in my class, and then throughout their degree program at UD is so rewarding. Seeing my students grow professionally after graduation continues to foster my desire to learn more and help more students through their educational journey.
