Admissions to the Education Preparation Program (EPP)

Students pursuing EC-6 or Middle School (4-8) certification must complete all Teaching Concentration coursework before applying for admission to the Education Major and the Educator Preparation Program’s Clinical Teaching phase. Admission constitutes formal declaration of the Education Major. Admission is not automatic upon completion of Teaching Concentration coursework and requires the following:

 1. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 (consistent with SBEC requirements under 19 TAC §227.10)

 2. Faculty review of the candidate’s readiness, disposition for the classroom, and overall professionalism informed by performance across Teaching Concentration coursework and field-based placements.

3. Students must complete Literacy 1 + Literacy 1 FBE and School and Society coursework before being considered for admission. 

Students pursuing Secondary or All-Level certification must complete all Certification Concentration coursework, excluding Clinical Teaching, before applying for admission to the Educator Preparation Program’s Clinical Teaching phase. Admission is not automatic and requires the following:

 1. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 overall and in the content-area teaching field (consistent with SBEC requirements under 19 TAC §227.10)

 2. Completion of the required content-area coursework in the certification field sought (12 semester hours, or 15 for Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)

 3. Faculty review of the candidate’s readiness and disposition for the classroom, informed by performance across Certification Concentration coursework and field-based placements

Students who complete the required coursework but are not admitted to the EPP will not proceed to Clinical Teaching or Texas certification. Such students may complete the Teaching Concentration, and its non-certification credential, by additionally completing EDU 3V20 Literacy 1 and EDU 3V25 Literacy 1 Field-Based Experience.
